how do you look at art? and what are your beliefs on its interpretation. i look at a lot of the artwork you post and dont really see much meaning behind it at times- other than the admiration the technical aspect of it. 2 cents?

I’m going to say this from a layperson’s perspective, because that’s all I am, so in that respect “2 cents” is a pretty good way to put it.

When I hear people say with regard to a work of visual art, “But what does it mean? It doesn’t seem to mean anything,” what I actually hear them saying is “I’m not responding to this on a visceral level.” In other words, “I’m not feeling it. It’s not doing anything for me,” which is completely fine, but the operative pronouns are “I” and “me”.

You have to like it first, subjectively, viscerally, aesthetically, it has to appeal to your tastes and senses first and foremost, and then you start to come up with your own interpretations, which may well be completely contrary to the artist’s motives for having created it, which is also completely fine. Afterward you can go deeper, find out the historical context, the backstory to the work, etc., and with that you find yourself maturing, appreciating more and more, and being moved by more and more kinds of art. But it begins with you liking something. It’s not fair to blame the work of art for being “meaningless” just because it doesn’t do anything for you.

When you hear a piece of music, let’s say a symphonic piece by Boulez (which can be difficult to like, honestly), and let’s say you just don’t like it. You don’t ever say “I can’t hear any meaning in this”; you say, “It’s not my kind of music; I prefer more melodic music, or this is too dissonant for me, or it’s too long, or I’m bored with it, etc.” and move on.

I think we forgive music because it’s abstract by nature. We expect music to hit us directly in our abstract hearts. When it doesn’t, we find the music that does. We don’t forgive visual artists and their art so easily. For whatever reason we think visual art has to “mean” something. It doesn’t. It isn’t obligated to “mean” anything any more than a piece of music is.

Sometimes you just need to write. Sometimes you need to pour out every thought you have into the world and let it just sit. Sometimes you need someone to listen when no one is there. Sometimes you have someone you need to forgive and be forgiven by and sometimes that doesn’t happen. Sometimes those people drift into the ether and stay there because you’re too proud, too angry, too determined…and sometimes that makes you feel bad. Sometimes that makes you feel heartless. Sometimes. Most Times.
